The beautiful building of the Shumovsky Palace is called the most beautiful not only in Chita, but almost all over the Trans-Baikal region. Unfortunately, it is impossible to examine it from the inside: today, according to the historical tradition of the 20th century, the regional department of the FSB is located in the palace. On the other hand, this has its pluses: thanks to this, the palace is now in such good condition.
The construction of the building began in 1912, and its gold miners-millionaires, the brothers Shumovs ordered it. The brothers specifically demanded that the palace look rich and lush, and the chief city architect of that time, Mosashvili, became famous. Baroque and classicism were combined in the architectural form of the monumental building. Moreover, in its present form the palace is considered unfinished: the wall opposite from the main facade was "under-painted" because of the beginning of the First World.
After the revolution, the building was not used once: there were Austrian POWs of World War I, the office of the Japanese consul, a public library and a radio circle. In the late 1930's. the palace was finally handed over to the NKVD's administration and still remains with the department, although the latter changed its name.
The facade of the building is abundantly decorated with decorative elements: cornices, molded flower ornaments, balconies, pilasters on the third floor . On the corner there is a bay window semicircular, elongated like a tower . The interiors of the palace correspond to its external appearance: here you can (would) see a large front staircase, marble floors, flower molding, wrought iron grilles with pink bouquets . On The French floor tiles still retain their floors: alas, its condition leaves much to be desired, and restoration is impossible - there is simply no such material today . Also during the restoration of 1999 ., an original painting of the ceiling with large colors . was found Restorers tried to preserve all the elements of the interior decoration of the building, such as door handles made of bronze, old batteries, noisy British safes and a Venetian chandelier in one of the offices .
In the palace building there is a small Museum of Management History where you can see a replica of the cabinet of a Chekist of the mid-20th century with genuine furniture. Also in the museum is a mock-up of the building at a scale of 1: 100, created by the descendant of the family of the Shumovs and the employee of the department.
