Add a review about the Abraham-Bogoyavlensky Monastery
Bogoyavlensky Avraamiev Monastery - one of the oldest in the territory of modern Rostov the Great. The monastery stands on the bank of Lake Nero and looks very picturesque from the water. It was founded at the end of the 11th or the beginning of the 12th century by the famous saint, the Reverend Avraham of Rostov, who settled here on the shore of the lake, next to the pagan temple where the idol of the god Veles stood.
According to legend, Abraham, who wanted to crush this idol, he went to Tsargrad, but did not have time to move away a little from Rostov, as he crossed the Ishnu River with John the Theologian, who presented him with a wonderful staff. This idol was also destroyed by an idol, and on Ishna Abrahamy built the church of St. John the Theologian
On the site of the ancient pagan temple where Veles was destroyed, Abraham founded the Temple of the Epiphany. Believers began to flock to the monk, who wished to remain here under his leadership; so there was a man's abode on the shore of Lake Nero.
Until the 16th century the monastery was wooden.
The Epiphany Cathedral was really grandiose. High four-pillared building, crowned with five-headed, placed on a high podklet and from the south expanded gallery, the type of Yaroslavl temples. Also, the manner of the architects of Yaroslavl manifested itself in the fact that in the south-western corner of the gallery there is a bell tower, and the eastern part of the gallery ends with a chapel. There are three chapels in the temple, they are dedicated to Avraamy of Rostov, John the Theologian and John the Baptist.
Chronicle indicates that when going on a campaign to Kazan, the king took with him a shrine - the staff of John the Theologian, kept with the relics of Abraham. There is an assumption, not documented, that for the construction of the cathedral Ivan the Terrible sent from Moscow his master Andrei Malo.
At present the monastery has a ceramic workshop and a refectory. A sewing workshop was opened for sewing church vestments and much more. But much remains to be done for the improvement of the monastic life.
