Sights of the surroundings of Pila
Just 20 minutes by cable car there is the city of Aosta, which is considered a historical and cultural center of Valle d'Aosta .From the Roman times here are preserved the arch of Augustus, the Pretorian gates, the theater, the covered Cryptoportico gallery, the arsenal with three small temples, the ruins of the old fortress with the Torre del Pylleron tower, the ruins of the Roman amphitheater and the Villa Della Consolata, and the bridge over the Dora- Baltea . There are also a lot of medieval monuments here - the collegiate church of Sant'Orso, the towers of the noble families DeFromage and Dei Balivi, the monastery of Santa Caterina, the Piazza Roncas square, the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta with an excellent museum, the chapel of San Grato and Town Hall .
In addition, you can visit the medieval castles in Valle d'Aosta, the most famous of which are Isson ( Issue, Vince, Verrès, Fénis and Sarre, located in the same communes
The Renaissance castle of Isson is famous for its fountain in the form of a pomegranate wood and an arched gallery, painted with frescoes. The first mention of the castle dates back to 1151, when it served as the residence of Bishop Aosta. The castle of Verres, erected in 1390 and awarded the title of the most impressive building of the Middle Ages in Valle d'Aosta, is a single fortified structure, the main purpose of which was protection. Every year, the castle hosts the traditional carnival of Verres.
The Fenis Castle, dating from 1242, despite its impressive defensive structures, was conceived not for military purposes, but as the prestigious residence of the Shallan family . On the ground floor you can visit armory, kitchen, shed and a rainwater collection tank . On the second floor there are master rooms and a chapel with frescoes by the famous Italian artist Giacomo Jacquière . The third floor, which is an attic, was used by servants . The castle of Sarr, built in 1710 on the ruins of an ancient fortress, was in various hands before it was acquired by King of Italy Victor Emmanuel II, who decorated the castle walls for a luxurious hunting lodge . In 1989, Sarr was bought by the administration of the Valle d'Eau Region 'Aosta, restored and opened for visitors . Photo of Pila (21)
