How to get to Rocco-Imperial
Rocca-Imperiale is located 129 km from Cosenza and just 5 km from the border with Basilicata. In the town there is a train station on Via Taranto, where trains arrive from the neighboring miniature Nova Siri (on the way 5 minutes, the fare is 1 euro), as well as larger cities, for example, Cosenza (on the way 2 hours , cost 6, 5 euros). The city was founded by the Emperor Frederick II in 1225 and named after the imperial castle. It is located on a mountain on top of which a castle has been built, which still exists, and is still in the final stage of restoration, the money for which UNESCO has allocated, since the castle is declared "a world cultural and historical treasure". From the once impressive complex built by Friedrich II, parts of the walls, bastions and bridges have been preserved.
The place for the construction of this castle was chosen for a reason: The Imperial Rock is 6 km from the sea, with a panorama of the entire Taranta Bay - from the end "Heel" to "sock." The castle was surrounded by a deep rocky moat, there were two large underground storages with water, which, in the case of the siege of the castle, would last almost one year. There is also an underground passage that leads to the mountainous forest behind the castle, but it collapsed with centuries and until its restoration is out of the question.
In the old part of the city where the majestic fortress is located, there is also a cathedral with a beautiful bell tower. Built in the 15th century, it was repeatedly rebuilt. Church of Sant Antonio (Chiesa di Sant'Antonio) is also definitely worth a look.
