Walking along the cozy streets of Lloret de Mar, pay attention to the local church of San Roma, built in the Gothic style. The building was erected a long time ago - as far back as 1522. It is interesting that the temple performed two functions at once. First, in connection with the relocation of the center of Lloret de Mar closer to the coast, the need arose to build a new church. The old one called Mare de Deu de Les Alegries was in an uncomfortable place. Secondly, the church of San Roma was used as a refuge.
The fact is that in those years the coast of Lloret de Mar was tried to capture pirates. Local residents had no choice but to hide in secluded places. That is why the bell tower of the church of San Roma was surrounded by a large wall with loopholes. The path to the temple passed through a drawbridge over a deep moat. In short, the church was a real fortress.
Many years later, already in the 20th century, it was decided to reconstruct San Rima. The architect of the renewed church was Bonaventura Conil-i-Montobio. The architect left the Gothic style as the main building style, but at the same time added many new elements. So, for example, modern details appeared in San Roma, the features of the Arabian and Byzantine cultures became clearly visible. Plus, the author diluted the Gothic style with details of the Renaissance.
True, today it is almost impossible to see the result of the reconstruction of 1914. During the civil war in 1936, many buildings, including the church of San Roma, were destroyed in the city. And now the church looks a little different
