An invariably strong impression on the guests of Torzhok makes territory Novotorzhsky Borisoglebsky Monastery - one of the oldest Russian Orthodox monasteries, founded around 1038 during the reign of Yaroslav I Vladimirovich almost at the same time with the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. The temple was laid in honor of the first Russian saints - princes Boris and Gleb, innocently killed by their brother Svyatopolk.
The first stone cathedral of the ensemble was badly damaged in 1607 when the Torzhok was captured by the Polish troops. At the end of the 18th century, a new cathedral was built, designed by architect Lvov N. A.
Dramatic fact: from 1925 to 1970, a strict regime prison was located on the territory of the monastery, and then until the 90s years - medical-labor preventive clinic, which fairly contributed to the destruction of the nowadays reconstructed monument.
