Historical background

Ascension Cathedral leads from the reign of the Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. Several old men, having secured the support of Ostashkov residents and the blessing of Patriarch Pitirim, went to the king to get permission to build a monastery with a church in honor of the sign. The emperor gave his consent and construction of the Znamensky Monastery and the Ascension Cathedral began in September of the same year

In the center of the Znamensky Monastery the Ascension Cathedral is located - one of the main attractions of Ostashkov, a pilgrimage center for believers and ordinary tourists who are interested in history, culture and church architecture .

The first wooden building of the cathedral lasted 12 years, then it was replaced by a new, also wooden, but more spacious Ascension church, and a few years later, when the ban was lifted for the construction of buildings made of stone, it was decided to replace the wooden cathedral with a stone one. As a result of all these transformations and reorganizations, the Ascension Cathedral was completed by 1748, but the work on its design continued until the beginning of the 19th century.

In 1868 there was a severe fire in the temple, as a result of which everything burned to the ground, including the cathedral decoration, and also its roof with chapters. Now the center of attention of the Ostashkovites was the restoration of the cathedral after the fire, and the construction work was resumed.

At the end of the 19th century the renewed temple finally opened its doors to the parishioners. The cathedral was made in the pseudo-Russian style, and the zest was decorated with arched vaults decorated in corners with columns, ledges with cornices and window and door grilles with an unusual pattern. The belfry was crowned with a hexagonal pyramidal spire, trimmed with white tin.

The Znamensky monastery, together with the Voznesensky cathedral, met the change of power in the same way as other Russian monasteries. In 1928, all the monastery premises were closed and given up for arrangement of the working town, then the garment factory was located here. The Great Patriotic War did not bring much destruction, therefore, almost immediately after its end, the warm part of the cathedral resumed divine services, and then the church was even returned to the believers who started its restoration.

From 1947 until July 1995, the relics of the Monk Nile were preserved in the Ascension Cathedral after the opening of the Nile Desert, they were solemnly transferred there, and only the remains of the relics remained in the Ascension Cathedral
