Ananyinsky burial ground is a unique monument of antiquity. It was discovered in the vicinity of Elabuga in 1868 and has been thoroughly studied to this day. Many of the items found here have entered the collections not only of the museums of the city, but also spread to other museums and exhibitions in Russia, and some were sent even abroad. Moreover, the discovery of Ananyinsky burial ground was the emergence of the term in historical science - "Anan'in culture."
This term today means archaeological culture that was spread from the end of the 9th to the 3rd century BC. e. in the Middle Volga region. After the discovery of the burial ground in Ananino, only 11 km from Elabuga, archaeologists continued to dig up evidence of the existence of a special culture in these territories. These were fortified settlements of ancient people, stone settlements and log houses, shrines and burial grounds
The name of the burial ground is given by the name of the village Ananyino - it is only 11 km from Yelabuga. Today, the locality on which the village used to stand is practically a part of the city line, therefore the burial ground is considered one of Elabuga's sights. The burial ground was opened in 1858 by the merchant Ivan Vasilyevich Shishkin, the father of the great Russian artist Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin, and also by the writer and journalist Pyotr Vladimirovich Alabin.
The ancient burial ground is located in the forest zone on the right bank of the Kama River. It was discovered quite by accident - during the flood of the river in the spring. The water washed the soil, revealing its deep layers. Then the bone remains of the ancient inhabitants of this area, objects of culture and life, the remains of houses and architectural structures were discovered. It is not enough to say that the discovery of the burial ground became an outstanding event, at its very essence it was a real breakthrough in history and archeology.
An ancient burial is located in a sandy hill with a diameter of about 200 m . Its height is small - only 4 m, but it was enough that the water did not blur the hill before and did not expose the remains of the burial ground . That's why it was not discovered before , although this area was inhabited at all times . The most interesting were the excavations at the foot of the hill - here were found two graves of the rulers in the form of stone rooks literally filled with remnants of weapons, jewelry and jewelry of those times . One of the graves is artfully decorated an engraving depicting the leader allegedly buried in it - a male warrior in a Scythian costume .
