The history of the monastery
The main attraction of the city of Pskov-Pechersky The Holy Assumption Monastery exists since the 15th century, it was he who gave the name city. At first there were two inconspicuous modest temples and an unremarkable life of a freelance monastery. But the deacon Misyur Munekhin for some reason turned his attention to the monastery and began to invest in it own funds. Diac was a man not only well-to-do but also influential, with extensive secular ties, which contributed to the strengthening of his spiritual career.
By 1528 the monastery had become a serious defensive structure, as powerful walls with observation platforms were built. This fortification proved to be more than useful, since the clashes with Lithuania did not stop. Moreover, Moscow was interested in weakening the religious influence of Novgorod, and therefore supported the Pskov-Pechersky Monastery in every possible way. The prosperity of the monastery began, which continues to this day, which anyone can be sure of: the monastery is open for visits.
Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery
The total length of the walls of the monastery is 726 meters, the thickness is 2 meters. Of the 10 towers, 9 were preserved: Taylovskaya; The tower of the Upper Grilles (the highest, stands at the bottom of the ravine); similar to her tower of the Lower Lattice; Tower Tararygin (or Nagolnaya); Izborsk tower (with gates facing the road to Izborsk); Blagoveshchenskaya (near the church of the Annunciation); Nikolskaya tower with the gate church of St. Nicholas Ratny; Petrovskaya Tower (entrance to the fortress); round Ostrovnaya tower.
Inside the fortress, just behind the Peter's Gate, there are the Nikolskaya church with the belfry of the 16th century and the St. Michael's Cathedral. The most ancient and interesting buildings of the monastery are the Assumption and Pokrovskaya churches. Nearby are the caves and the Big Six-Year Belfry of the 16th century.
A little to the north of there are the Sacristy, the Sretenskaya and the Annunciation churches united in one building, built in the 16th-17th centuries. A little further - Lazarevskaya church of the late 18th century.
It is worthwhile to look after a good guide, the story of which will contain the history of the monastery, and many legends associated with it (you can find a guide, for example, by visiting the Museum of the History of the City). As a rule, the cost of the excursion for a small group (3-7 people) is 300-400 rubles, women at the entrance are given handkerchiefs and semblance of skirts. Address: st. International, 5.
