A bit of history
Ancient man's sites discovered in the lower reaches of the Olonka River are dated by archaeologists 3-2 millennium BC. e. The name of the settlement occurs, perhaps, from the ancient Veppsian "alnus", which means "lowland", formerly called Alon's, Olon's'.
In 1649, at the confluence of the Olonka and Megrega rivers, in a place known as the Tolmachev navolok, was laid "pogreuzhnaya fortress" Olonets, which became an outpost in the fight against the Swedes. The fortress wall was 1, 5 km long and included 19 towers.
During the Great Patriotic War, Olonets was occupied by Finns who renamed it to Aunuslinna (Olonia fortress).
