Description of the monument
The monument is dedicated to the hardest page in the history of the Great Patriotic War . In September 1941, after of how the city was surrounded by the enemy, the only way to communicate with him was Lake Ladoga . It was within reach of the artillery and aviation of the besiegers, the combined naval flotilla of the enemy also operated on the lake . The throughput of this road was not up to the needs of a large city that did not have the blockade of the food stock needed for such a large number of people the day before . Soon the famine began in Leningrad . Since the first winter of winter was very severe, there were interruptions not only with food, but also with heating and transport . Victims were counted in hundreds of thousands . In January 1943 the blockade was broken, finally it was possible to remove it in winter 1944 .
The team of authors, who worked on the creation of the monument, put in its foundation a combination of symbolic means of representation with realistic details. The memorial makes a tremendous impression. In aphoristic form, the language of monumental sculpture, he tells about the great feat of the city-martyr
People waiting for food, much more needed it was from here. Front-line drivers, risking their lives, moved to a city surrounded from all sides. All this tense, tragic situation was handled without resorting to any unnecessary decor or abundance of details.
Two ferro-concrete semi-arches 7 m high symbolize the ring of the blockade, the gap between them - the Road of Life, on the concrete foundation - marks from automobile tires , leaving towards the lake. In this place, the blockade was broken with the inhuman efforts, fortitude and courage of the defenders of the city. The memorial composition is complemented by white concrete balls, which simulate searchlight installations. A real 85mm anti-aircraft gun was installed next to it, in memory of the fact that during the war the anti-aircraft battery was on the descent.
