Add a review about Koporskaya fortress

Koporskaya fortress, located in the northwest of Russia, fifteen kilometers from the Gulf of Finland, is a real treasure for lovers of Russian antiquity and history. Judge for yourself: the fortress, founded in 1237 by German knights from the Livonian Order, repeatedly changed from Russian to Swedes, then back, until it finally became Russia's with the winner of the Swedes Peter the First in 1703.

After the fortress was laid by the Livonian knights, the fortress was besieged and destroyed in 1241 by the Novgorod prince Alexander Yaroslavich (Nevsky), in the course of his struggle against the expansion of knights into Russia.

Due to the strategic importance, the fortress in Koporye was then demolished, then erected or defended smiling more than once (as is always the case with significant fortification objects).

In 1280 the son of Alexander Nevsky Dmitry Alexandrovich founded in Koporye a stone city, which of course also was destroyed, but already by the Novgorodians in 1282. The fortress was rebuilt in 1297. After this time the fortress changed owners many times during numerous Russian-Swedish military conflicts. It was rebuilt in the late 15th - early 16th centuries. The village of Koporye and the fortress finally withdrew to Russia under Peter I.

In 1761 the fortress lost the status of a defensive structure. In 2001 a museum was opened here, but in April 2013 Koporye was again closed for visits due to emergency conditions.

It is worth saying that the abandoned Koporskaya fortress creates a special atmosphere, despite all the disadvantages of desolation.

Koporskaya fortress is located on a picturesque elevation that causes its peculiar shape - the shape of the ellipse . Unfortunately, at the moment the fortress is in a depressing state and partially destroyed . But in spite of this, in one form or another survived: fortress walls with four towers (South , FROM True, Naugolnaya, Middle), the gates and the bridge (one part of which used to be lifted), the Transfiguration Church and the chapel . It is worth saying that the abandoned Koporskaya fortress creates a special atmosphere, despite all the minuses of desolation .
