The cast-iron monument to the lantern depicts a man sitting on a sidewalk fence with a ladder and a rope in his hands. It was delivered to the very place where the world's first street electric street lamp was installed in St. Petersburg in 1873.
It is difficult to imagine a city without streetlights, they are so familiar that we do not even notice them . But it was not always so, we noticed the presence of streetlights before. . In general, Petersburg became the first city in Russia , where appeared street lighting . It happened in 1706, the day of celebrating the victory over the Swedes . After that, the lanterns began to light on the occasion of different festivities . The installation of four permanent lamps in 1718 before the Winter Palace of Peter I can be considered the beginning of regular lighting . And literally in five years the main streets of the city totaled 595 lanterns .
In Odessa street in 1998 a monument to the St. Petersburg lamp-work of the sculptors B.Sergeev and O.Pankratova appeared. Here's a witty look at the invention, because thanks to Lodygin's success, the lanterns lost their jobs. Near the monument under the open sky opened a small museum of lanterns. It has six exhibits, which, unfortunately, do not illuminate the street.
