The Art Museum of Haifa was founded in 1951. It is one of the three largest art museums in the country. The focus here is the modern art of Israel and other countries. The collection of the museum has about 7,500 pieces of art, mostly works of Israeli artists. This painting, graphics, sculpture, photo and video.
The first works were acquired a couple of years after the foundation of the museum by its director, and the museum fund significantly expanded during the period from the 70's to the 90's. Today the whole collection is divided into two parts: paintings with sculptures and graphics. Among the Israeli authors, whose works can be seen in the museum, Michael Gross, Menachem Shemi, Moshe Kupperman. A lot of attention is paid here and specifically artists from Haifa. Among foreign masters whose works are exhibited in the museum are Marc Chagall and Diego Rivera
In addition, the museum has a collection of paintings on paper, made with gouache, watercolor, chalk, ink and charcoal. About a third of the collection of paper works is occupied by paintings by foreign artists, including world-renowned artists: Honore Daumier, Salvador Dali, Andre Mason, Moritz Escher, Georges Braque, Charles Le Corbusier, Joan MirĂ³. Among the works of local artists special attention is paid to hundreds of works by Herman Shtryuk. The collection of foreign prints includes thousands of prints from the middle of the 18th century to our days.
In recent years, the museum administration has focused on young artists and on less traditional forms of art - in particular, on installations and video. For storing and demonstrating the latter, the museum has a new media center. Today, you can get to know almost a hundred of video works, mostly samples of Israeli video art.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the exhibitions of the series "Personal Choice" regularly replace each other. This tradition began in 2006. Within the framework of the series, recognized intellectuals, art critics and critics are invited to present the works of an artist chosen to their taste. The choice is substantiated in a short essay
