Add a review about the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg

Strasbourg is one of the largest contemporary art museums in France. Usually, tourists are surprised when they find out about it - a Russian is more familiar with such a museum in the capital. But nevertheless it is located here and is called Musee d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg (MAMCS) - that is, the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.

It appeared in many ways by chance - a collector who lived in the region presented the city with his large collection. The city accepted it, joined it with its own, began to develop, received several more gifts from the best galleries in France, built a building for the museum - and now there are about 19 thousand exhibits in the collection. In a separate building and in its present form the museum was opened in 1998, the building turned out to be a peculiar, similar to a glass cube, but comfortable and spacious. The collection is constantly growing, the exhibits are very good here,

Claude Monet, Gauguin, Renoir, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Kandinsky - the list goes on.

Exposition

The collection covers the period from 1870 to our days. The exposition of the paintings is divided into 2 large sections - "Modern art" and "Contemporary art."

The section of modern art is perhaps the brightest part of the museum. The collection is gorgeous. It includes the works of many famous artists of the era, there are paintings by Claude Monet, Gauguin, Rossetti, Renoir, Braque, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Kandinsky, Ernst, Margaret and Miro and much more. Stunning collection, in most cases there is not one picture of each of the listed artists, but several.

One of the most interesting sections of the museum is Gustave Dore's gallery, one of the largest in the country - there are about 350 of his works.

The second part is devoted to modern art, here you can find the works of modern authors - the creators of new styles. The third section is called "Graphic Art", it contains about 15 thousand drawings. The fourth section is "Photography", among other things, there are the first photos taken when the photo just appeared. There are also good temporary exhibitions.

Another interesting section is a large collection of works by local craftsmen, mostly in Art Nouveau style. Do not be surprised: Rene Lalique, one of his creators, worked here in Alsace

In general, there is a wonderful collection, for the sake of paintings by Monet, Renoir and Picasso it is worth to come. The museum has a wonderful atmosphere and a very cozy library with glass walls.
