Add a review about the Museum of Contemporary Art in Marseille

As in many other centers of large regions, Marseilles has its own Museum of Modern Art. The collection here consists of two parts - local Provencal and international, it did not achieve special glory, but the selection is large and good.

In general, the traditions in terms of modern painting in Provence are rich (it is worth recalling that great Impressionists such as Cezanne worked there , Van Gogh and many others), but this museum is somewhat different: it is dedicated to art from the 60's . of the last century and up to the present day, that is, there is no modern day . But there are a lot of paintings of artists, almost unknown in Russia, as well as a remarkable regional I'm a collection . The museum is young, it appeared in Marseilles only in 1994 ., but it is constantly increasing, it conducts a lot of activities and connoisseurs of contemporary art, most likely will like it .

In the museum you can find pictures, sculpture, photography, installations and many other forms. Some surprise, others shock. Although it is very modest compared to some London or Paris galleries

Collection

The permanent exhibition consists of two parts:

The first part contains paintings by artists from all over the world. The Americans predominate there (as in general in many museums devoted to this time interval), there are a number of very interesting things. For example, the works of Carsten Heller and Robert Smithson. For the average Russian, these names do not say much, but Western Europe has been arguing over their work for the last 40 years.

The second part is the Provencal one, the works of local artists are on display here. Do not be confused by the word "local" - Van Gogh was also at one time a local resident. This is an interesting, unusual, bright collection that emerged at the junction of cultures - and this is something that is always interesting. Masterpieces and big names are not found in the collection, it is likely to be of interest only to the connoisseur of the genre, but there is one trick that makes this museum curious.

The trick is that there are also temporary exhibitions. And since the museum has large halls, it is here that so-called world expositions are usually held. If Andy Warhol was brought to Provence, most likely, it will be here.

In the museum you can find paintings, sculpture, photographs, installations and many other forms. Some surprise, others shock. In general, a conservative person is better to choose another museum, and for visiting with a child or parents it is hardly suitable. Although he is very modest compared to some London or Parisian galleries
