Troy (Truva, Troy) - a city located in the northwestern part of Anatolia, near the Dardanelles and Mount Ida, is on the UNESCO list of sites. Troy is known for the most part because of the Trojan War (and the very horse) described in many works of the ancient epic, including the world famous Odyssey and Iliad by Homer.

How to get to Troy

Troy is two kilometers from the Canakkale-Izmir highway (D550 / E87), from which you will need to turn off when you will see the Troy or Truva index.

The nearest town to the Three, Canakkale, is 30 kilometers to the north of it. From there, buses run every hour to Troy, departing from a stop under a bridge across the Sari River. The bus takes about half an hour and costs 3 lire.

In summer the buses are sent regularly, but the rest of the time you better arrive early, so as not to miss the last bus leaving.

Restaurants

Restaurants in Troy, too, not so much. In the above-mentioned hotel Hisarlik has a cozy restaurant with home cooking, working from eight in the morning until eleven in the evening. If you decide on it, try güveç, a meat stew in the pot.

In addition, you can have lunch in the village of Priamos or Wilusa located 50 meters from the ticket office. Both restaurants prepare Turkish cuisine, and the latter is also well known for its meatballs and tomato salad.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions Troy

There is a wooden copy of the Trojan horse next to the entrance to the city, inside of which you can enter. But it is better to do this on weekdays, because on weekends it is filled with tourists and it will be quite difficult to climb or look around. But if you decide to visit Troy in the winter, you can get the knight in sole use.

Next to it is the Excavation Museum, which displays models and photographs telling how the city looked in different periods. Opposite the museum is the Pithos garden with water tubes and clay pots of that time.

But the main attraction of Troy is undoubtedly the ruins. To get to the city, you will need a ticket worth 15 lira, for visitors it is open from daily from eight in the morning until seven in the evening from May to September and from eight to five in the period from October to April.

The presence of the guide helped a lot you will be familiar with Troy, since the ruins of many buildings are difficult to identify on their own, and because of different historical layers, they all mixed up.

Troy was destroyed and rebuilt nine times - and from each of the nine rebuilding in the city, then it remains to this day, although amateur excavations in the 19th century turned out to be extremely destructive

Map of Troy
It is most convenient to use a circle encompassing it to inspect the city. To the right of the entrance you can see the walls and tower of the period of Troy VII (that is, the city as it became after it was rebuilt for the seventh time) relating to the period when the city was most suited to the descriptions of Homer in the Iliad . There you can go down the stairs and walk along the walls.

Then the road will lead you to the brick walls, partially restored, and partially preserved in its original form. Above them is the destroyed altar of the temple of Athena, along which the walls of the early and middle periods pass, and on the contrary, the houses of the rich inhabitants of the city.

Continuing the path, you will pass the trenches left from Schliemann's excavations and come to the palace complex, also related to the period , most likely described in the Iliad. To the right of the palace are parts of the sanctuary of the ancient gods.

Finally, the road leads you to the concert hall of Odeon and the city council chambers. Walking along the stone road, you will return to the place from which you started your inspection.

Troyes

Troy neighborhood

At least 30 km south of ancient Troy is the old Alexandria of Troyan - a city founded by the commander of Alexander the Great Antigone in 300 BC. e. However, this vast archaeological site, unlike the popular Troy, is almost not marked. Accordingly, you can hardly figure out yourself without deep knowledge of ancient history.

The outskirts of the village of Gulpinar, where the picturesque ruins of the temple of Apollo, which was erected in the 5th century BC, are noteworthy. e. colonists from Crete. The most western point of Asia - Cape Baba - is interesting for its fishing port Babakalek (Babakale, Babakale, "Baba Fortress"), where there is a charming Ottoman castle of the 18th century. Here you can also refresh yourself by bathing either directly among the boulders that surround the harbor on both sides, or else traveling 3 km to the north to a nice equipped beach.

Another "highlight" of these places is the town of Ayvacik 30 km east of Troy . At the end of the week traders from all outskirts flock to the local market, the best souvenir here is a colorful carpet . If you are lucky enough to get to Ayvacik at the end April, one can find the traditional annual gathering of nomadic peoples Paniyyr . At this time bright dancing and musical performances, noisy bazaars, where thoroughbred horses are exhibited, are arranged . In addition, the ancient Assos, whose name is located 25 km to the south caresses the ears of not one fan with tariffs . Photo of Troy (12)
