Segovia lies on a rocky hill 90 km north-west of Madrid. It is one of the oldest cities in Spain, founded by the Romans in 90 BC. e. Segovia is relatively small, so the concentration of historical monuments here is simply outstanding - almost the entire old part of Segovia is a large open-air museum. Therefore, it is not surprising that the historical center of Segovia is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985.

Segovia is insane and beautiful, and to fully enjoy the beauties of the city, it is worthwhile to come here with an overnight stay. The only drawback that can be found near the city is its size. All those wishing to spend the night in the city on the weekend just do not have enough space, you need to book very much in advance.

Cuisine and restaurants

Typical restaurants in Segovia and Castile are called mesones. To visit them is the best way to get acquainted with the traditions, culture and cuisine of the region. In Segovia, Meson Candido (Azoguejo, 5) is one of the most famous mesones in the city. You can also visit the Restaurante Jose Maria (Cronista Lecea, 11, next to Plaza Mayor), where there is always a free table, even if you did not book it. Meson Duque (Calle Cervantes, next to Acueducto) is one of the most prestigious restaurants in Segovia.

There are good restaurants in and around the city. A magnificent (but slightly expensive) meson in the center of the Castillian plains is La venta vieja (Ctra.Nac-603 Km.80, Ortigosa Del Monte). Or Restaurante Bar Marcial (Ctra., 110, Km. 227, Villacastin), whose cuisine is famous throughout the region.

Entertainment, sightseeing and attractions of Segovia

The Roman aqueduct listed on UNESCO's list is the main symbol of Segovia. In addition, it is the longest Roman aqueduct that has survived in Western Europe. Its length is 728 m, the height is 28 m, and the date of construction is still disputed, inclined to the idea that he was elevated to the reign of Emperor Vespasian.

Also available: Alcázar Castle, a luxurious cathedral in Late Gothic style, unique Romanesque churches and traces of the largest Jewish colony in the center of Spain. From the towers of the Alcázar you can see a truly royal view of the green hills, Castilian villages and the Guadarram mountain chain that can be seen in the distance.

Beautiful Segovia

In addition, in the city you should pay attention to two elegant Catholic monasteries: Santa Cruz- La Conal (Convento de Santa Cruz la Real), founded in 1218, and El Parral (1447). The first long time belonged to the Order of Dominicans, in 1836 it was requisitioned and today its walls became a refuge for students and the University. The second, El Parral, was founded by Juan de Pacheco, the Marquis de Vilena, in several styles: Gothic, Mudejar and Plateresque, which were marvelously entwined in its architecture. The original appearance was due to the architect Juan Guas.

It is rumored that it was the castle of Segovia that became the prototype of the castle in the Disney version of Cinderella.
