The Museum-Preserve of the city of Azov is on the list of Russia's sights that are worth visiting to learn more about your country's history . The Azov Reserve has been counting its existence since 1917 ., The first exposition was presented to the public, including old coins and postage stamps, engravings, minerals and weapons . Civil war suspended the activity of the museum collective, the revival began only in 1937 ., but during the military the collection was lost, the museum was closed again . The museum survived its third birth in 1960 ., from that time it was no longer closed . Slowly but surely a new collection was accumulated, based on the findings found during archaeological excavations . At present the reserve occupies the building of the former city government, built in 1892 . eclectic style .
For more information about the exhibition The museum contains more than 340 thousand. pieces, of which more than 200 thousand. relates to fixed assets, the rest are stored in the vaults. Each year the museum is replenished with new exhibits, on average it is more than 3 thousand items of storage.
The half of the whole collection is made up of complexes of archaeological researches, some of them are unique in the world museum framework . In such complexes the culture of ancient peoples inhabiting different epochs of the Don Region, is presented not fragmentarily, but with the maximum coverage: products of arts and crafts, numismatic samples, garments and cooking utensils . Almost 20 thousand . exhibits belong to the Scythian-Sarmatian epoch, en Olita and bronze . Among the exhibits is allocated the largest in the south of Russia meeting brassware .
The central exhibit of the Azov reserve, which became its symbol, is the surviving skeleton of the elephant-trogontery belonging to the interglacial period, which is more than 600 thousand years old. Of all known skeletons in the world, the Azov is the largest, and with the skull still preserved. No less unique are other exhibits of the paleontological collection: the trogonterium beaver, the Gromov's elephant, the antelope, the Livencov horse, the Azov giraffe. It was in the excavations on the Don land that the bones of these prehistoric animals were first found.
The exhibits covering the events of the Azov capture by the Don Cossacks took their place in the museum's collection. The heroic pages of Azov's state of siege are told by the original guns, cores and armor found in the fortress, as well as Turkish miniatures and paintings.
