Volokolamsk is a small town in the west of the Moscow region, the oldest in the whole region, which is remarkable for its history, architecture and cultural monuments. The first mention of Volokolamsk refers to 1135, the Laurentian Chronicle, when the city was called the Wolf on the Lama. Until the 18th century, he was also often called Volok Lamsky or just Volok.
The historical center is on the Gorodnya River (the tributary of Lama), 5 km north of the railway station. How to get here
Volokolamsk station (50 October, 10th Street) is located in the southern part of the city, 7 km from the historical center. From Moscow, trains run here (to Volokolamsk or Shakhovskaya) from the Riga railway station (on the way 2, 5 hours). The city center, its architectural dominant and the main attraction is the Volokolamsky Kremlin, whose ensemble includes an elegant Resurrection Cathedral (the second half of the 15th century), St. Nicholas Cathedral (1853-62, now a memorial museum dedicated to who died in the Crimean War) and the bell tower (1888). In summer, guests and residents of Volokolamsk are invited to climb the bell tower to explore the surroundings of the city, to enjoy the views of the river and cozy streets in the historical center.
Another important religious monument of the city is the Rozhdestvenskaya Bogoroditskaya church on Vozmishche (1535) outskirts of the city. It is worth a stroll and to the Intercession Church (1695).
Despite the fact that the Soviet authorities left a deep trace of boring gray buildings in the city, in Volokolamsk there is still a charming urban development of imperial times: civil buildings of the 19th - early 20th century and church of the late 17th - 18th centuries. Since 1959 in the city there is the Volokolamsky People's Theater "Na Valu."
In the vicinity of Volokolamsk there is also a lot of interesting. For example, the village of Dubosekovo and the memorial on the site of the heroic deed of 28 Panfilov heroes. Finally, a visit to Volokolamsk would be incomplete, without a trip to the quiet holy monastery of Joseph-Volokolamsk Assumption Monastery. Built in the 16th and 17th centuries, the monastic complex includes walls with towers, churches, residential and household buildings. It is located 16 km north-east of the city of Volokolamsk, near the village of Teryaevo. You can get there by bus to Klin, Teryaevo or Shanino.
Manor of Yaropolets
Special attention should be paid to the museum-preserve of the Goncharovs' estate in Yaropolets . Here not only the manor house but also the service buildings and the manor church were kept . Once this place belonged to Alexander Pushkin's mother-in-law, twice here and the great poet - in 1833 and 1834 . Next - the Chernyshevs' estate with a charming house and a monumental church, alas, in ruins . It is worth to stroll through the extensive manor park, somewhat overgrown, but not lost its charm . To Yaropolitsa from Volokolamsk can be found take a bus to Lotoshino, Musino or the final stop - Yaropolz (20 km) .
