Uglich Alekseevsky Monastery is one of the oldest in Russia. It was founded at the end of the 14th century by Metropolitan Alexy, but was destroyed almost to the ground during the Polish-Lithuanian intervention of the early 17th century. The architectural dominant of the monastery is the elegant Assumption Church with a refectory, which in the old days was called the Divine for its unprecedented beauty. The most interesting building of the ensemble is the unique three-tiered Assumption Church. Standing at its foot, it is worth paying attention to the openwork stone carving and the ascending snowy tiers - an exciting example of true Russian religious architecture. Like the Church of St. Basil the Blessed in Moscow, it is a memorial temple built in memory of the inhabitants of Uglich, who died during the Polish-Lithuanian intervention.
