In the landscape panorama of the Volga Plesa, a special role is played by the snow-white Varvarinskaya church, which for many years adorns the eastern part of the city. This modest, devoid of excesses, a provincial church was built in classic style with voluminous-spatial forms characteristic of the 17th century.

The Barbary Church of the Martyr stands on the spot more an ancient wooden Varvarinsky church. The proposed date for the construction of the bell tower is 1821, and the church itself could have been built in Ples much earlier, according to some studies.

The main part of the temple in the spirit of simplicity and ascetic rigor somewhat contrasts with a lavish bell tower decorated with columns, high arches and luccarnas, which indicates a later construction of the bell tower in the style of classicism.
In the interior decoration of the Varvarinsky church see glue paintings on biblical themes: "Carrying the Cross," "Nailing to the Cross," "The Condition of the Coffin," and "Resurrection." Plots from the life of Christ are decorated with ornamental frames in the baroque tradition.
The Varvara Church, along with the wooden Resurrection Church, was depicted on the picturesque canvases of Isaac Levitan, who spent several years in Plysa in search of inspiration for creative work.
The slender silhouette of the Varvarinskaya church is depicted in the picture "Golden Plios". More than a hundred years have passed since the writing of the canvas, and Ples in the picture and Ples in life are almost indistinguishable. The Volga also carries its waters, on its banks, the slender snow-white church of Barbara the Great Martyr rises stately.
