The Museum of the Arctic and Antarctic was opened to visitors on January 8, 1937, but the decision to create it was made much earlier. Already in the 1920s, in connection with the active exploration of the Arctic, many prominent polar explorers and scientists came up with proposals for the organization of a permanent polar museum.
The museum quickly received not only domestic, but also international recognition. In 1937, at the World Exhibition in Paris, his exhibits were awarded the Honorary Diploma. In the 1950s, a new stage in the development of the polar regions of the globe began - a systematic study of Antarctica.
Among the exhibits there are also instruments and expedition equipment, written, cartographic and printed sources, photo documents . The museum's funds store photographs capturing many significant events in the Arctic, including the initial period of the existence of the world's first Arctic icebreaker Ermak, the activities of the Hydrographical Expedition of the Arctic Ocean, a march on the Krasin icebreaker to save participants of the Italian expedition on the airship "Italy", the work of the first drifting stations of the joint venture and the first Soviet Antarctic expeditions . RSMAA has the archives of famous polar captains, Soviet polar explorers, as well as the designers of the first nuclear icebreaker "Lenin" and the nuclear icebreaker "Arktika" @ .@@
