Add a review about Nikolsky Monastery

Nikolsky Monastery is located away from the road, between the Yaroslavl highway and the Trubezh river. Next to it, literally at its walls, stands the Smolensk-Kornilievskaya church, left from the Borisoglebsky monastery.

At the end of the 17th century the Korsun cross was brought to the monastery, which became its main shrine. According to legend, only ten such crosses with parts of the relics of saints Prince Vladimir brought to Kiev from Chersonesos

History

The monastery of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was founded around 1350 by the Monk Dimitri Prilutsky as a man's abode. Soon, in 1382, with the invasion of the Tatar hordes under the leadership of Khan Tokhtamysh, the monastery was ruined along with the whole city. Restored it only in the XV century; up to the Time of Troubles, the monastery prospered, receiving rich donations. The Polish-Lithuanian troops again ravaged him; in 1613 the elder Dionysius came to the monastery, which began a new revival of it.

At the end of the 17th century the Korsun cross was brought to the monastery, which became its main shrine. According to tradition, only ten such crosses with parts of the relics of saints Prince Vladimir brought to Kiev from Chersonese (Korsun), from which the shrines and received their name. The cross from the St. Nicholas Monastery is now kept in the Pereslavl Historical Museum

Architecture of the Monastery

Two of the old churches in the monastery are preserved. This is the gatehouse of the Peter and Paul Church and the refectory of the Annunciation Church

The Gate Church of Peter and Paul

Built in the Baroque style, in time, apparently, has lost some of its decor (on windows, for example, there are no curly casings usual for the Baroque) , but otherwise remained intact . The slender and upward tendency of the church is attached to a dome that is stretched upwards, crowned by a narrow high drum with a small gilded headboard . In the dome on four sides are cut rather large windows-lucarne, similar in shape and the size of the four-leaved windows on which the dome rests . The church was built on the donations of the Moscow merchants of the Kholshchevnikov brothers .

The Blagoveshchenskaya church

With a small refectory, it also refers to the Baroque style. It was built on the funds of Moscow citizens Shchelyagin instead of the burnt Kazan Church. Its roof, like the dome of the Peter and Paul Church, is stretched to the top and carries a tall narrow drum crowned with a small cupola. At the corners of the chetverik are placed drums of a slightly smaller size, with the same glazes.

Monastery Fence

The monastery is surrounded by a low brick fence with decorative turrets, some of which have already been restored. Fence was erected in 1761 and stood until 1903, when it was due to dilapidation had to be repaired. Until the works are finished, the contrast between what was with the walls and the towers is clearly visible, and what has become: on different sides of the Holy Gates with the gate church there are supposedly completely different walls: on the left - restored and re-whitened, on the right - skewed, bricks.
