This synagogue of the 19th century is the religious and cultural center of the Jewish community . This is the only synagogue in Wrocław that survived the holocaust . It was newly consecrated in 2010 . after restoration , which lasted 10 years . Originally the Breslau synagogue was opened in 1829 ., and it was located in a three-story neoclassical building designed by Karl Ferdinand Langans . One of the leading architects of Silesia, he was among the most famous German theater design and designed the Theater of the acting guild and Opera . The original interior, now lost, was created by the artist Raphael Biew and his son Hermann .
During the Jewish pogroms, the Nazis burned a new synagogue where progressive Jews gathered, but synagogue Under the white stork where the Orthodox prayed, escaped this fate, as it stood next to other, non-Jewish buildings. In 1943, the synagogue was converted by the Nazis into a depot for plundered Jewish property, and its courtyard was used as a gathering place for Jews to be sent to death camps
After the war, a new Jewish community and the synagogue began to serve simultaneously as a community center and a place for prayer . In the era of communism, it was repeatedly vandalized by unknown vandals . After the political crisis of 1968 ., which was accompanied by an anti-Semitic campaign, most of the Wrocl Jews and the divine services in the synagogue actually stopped . In 1974 the . city authorities handed over the building to the University of Wroclaw, which used it as a library . In 1989 the . building was turned into a music academy at the university . In 1995 . it was purchased by a private company and subsequently returned to the Jewish community .
Main prayer hall on three sides surrounded by galleries for women. Two levels of galleries are located in the north and two in the south, together they limit the one-level gallery on the eastern wall with the arch of the Torah. The wooden frame of the arch is all that was left of the once rich interior decoration of the synagogue
In 2014 the synagogue was the first to place the four rabbis and three cantors from the Second World War . At present, there are plans to create a Jewish museum in the synagogue. While the synagogue is sometimes used as a venue for concerts, for example, the famous violinist Nigel Kennedy played in the festival Ethno Jazz in 2013.
