Brixen (Brixen ., and Bressanone on ital .) is one of the oldest cities in the Italian province of Bolzano-South Tyrol, part of the autonomous region of Trentino-Alto Adige . Accurately settling in the Isarco valley, Brixen is surrounded by fruit orchards and vineyards, and is considered a "pearl" of Tyrolean architecture .The city has a glorious past and a quiet tranquil present . From 1027 to 1803 Brixen was the center of a large church principality, and his prince bishops ruled over much of South Tyrol . Impressive monuments of that period today dominate the architecture of the city - this is the cathedral and the bishop's palace . Softened paints pointed light brown houses and narrow cobblestone streets .

A bit of history

First the mention of the city dates back to 901. Upon completion of the construction of the cathedral in 992, Bishops of the Roman municipality of Sabion moved to Brixen, which served as the beginning of the founding of the Brixen episcopate, which in 1179 became an independent principality. In 1803, as a result of secularization, Brixen became part of the Austrian Empire, and only in 1919, according to the terms of the Saint Germain Treaty, was transferred to Italy and became known as Bressanone (although most residents and tourists persistently call him Brixen).

There are not many hotels in the city, they are mostly boarding houses and "treshki". You can stay in the surroundings of Brixen - it's picturesque and closer to the ski slopes.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Brixen

The greatest interest in Brixen represents the Cathedral, designed in the 10th century, and twice rebuilt: in the 13th century and in 1745-1754. in the Baroque style. In the cathedral Paul Paul Trogre's fresco "Adoration of the Lamb" adorning the ceiling of the nave is remarkable.

In addition to the cathedral, it is worth noting the palace of the bishop (Hofburg), made in the 13th century in the Renaissance style, considered one of the largest palaces in South Tyrol. Currently, the palace houses a museum where you can see creches of Christ, created by the order of Bishop Charles Franz Lodron, with 5 thousand figures. Also noteworthy is the church of Saint Michael, whose construction dates back to the 11th century. The church was rebuilt in the 15th century, and now it is adorned with gothic choirs and a belfry.

Brixen is worth a visit to a pharmaceutical museum located in an old pharmacy building that was opened in 1787 by the Pir family. In the restored museum halls, it is possible to trace the stages of the development of the pharmaceutical industry, including the evolution of medicines, over the centuries.

The castles of Rodengo and Tasso are located not far from Brixen. Castle of Rodengo (Castello di Rodengo) was built in the 12th century and is considered one of the largest in the province of South Tyrol. Around 1500 the castle was restored and extended by the family of Wolkenstein, whose descendants are still its owners. The frescoes found in 1972 and depicting the legend of Iveyan, the hero of the medieval novel, knight of the Round Table of King Arthur, are of greatest interest in the castle.

Castel Tasso is located in the Aisak Valley and is famous for its "Green Hall" paintings in the Gothic style and a collection of armor. The castle also features a bathroom, kitchen and sleeping rooms made in medieval style.
