Ancona, the capital of the Italian province of Marche, is an important port on the Adriatic coast. Unfortunately, most of the medieval city was destroyed during the Second World War. Nevertheless, it is worth seeing the Cathedral, towering over Ancona, as well as a monument erected on the embankment by dictator Mussolini. From the sandy beaches stretching from Venice to Pescara, there are stunning views of the sea. The well-known resorts of Portonovo, Sirolo and Santa Maria di Badia are comfortably situated at the foot of the hill

History
Ancona was founded around 390 years BC. e. The name of the city comes from a slightly modified Greek word meaning "elbow". The harbor to the east of the city was first protected only by a cape, in the shape of an elbow. Greek merchants founded a purple factory here.
In 178 BC. e. The city was occupied by the Roman troops of Titus Livius, later - Julius Caesar (after crossing the Rubicon). The Ancona Harbor was of great importance during the time of the empire, as it was nearest to Dalmatia, and was expanded by Trajan.
In the Middle Ages Ancona was proclaimed an independent republic that the Venetian Republic, the Roman Church and the German emperors tried to capture. In 1532, the power of the Pope was established in the city. During the wars of the French Revolution, the port city became, for a short time, the Anconita republic, which soon became part of the Roman Republic. After the defeat of Napoleon, the authority of the Pope was restored, and Ancona became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.
