Less stiff than some of the provincial cities of Emilia-Romagna, Ferrara retained the luxury of the Renaissance, when the city was the residence of the family of d'Este, who ruled here from 1260 to 1598. Under the patronage of the Dukes of d'Este in Ferrara, Petrarch, Titian, Antonio Pisanello, and the poets Torquato Tasso and Ludovico Ariosto spent their time.
Thanks to the family of d'Este, a number of beautiful objects were built in Ferrara, but the real masterpiece is the city itself. The double-the half-medieval, half-Renaissance-Ferrara cityscape was the vision of Ercole d'Este, who hired architect Biagio Rossetti, to blend "new" with the old.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions Ferrara
Ferrara is rich in architectural attractions, among which, in the first place, there are several castles belonging to the family of d'Este.
Castles of Ferrara
The first castle of d'Este Palazzo-Mounichipale, erected in the northern part of the city right in front of the cathedral, served as a family residence until the end of the 15th century, when the family moved to the neighboring Castello Estense .
Castello Estense Castle owes its origin to the Torre dei Leoni watchtower, which by the beginning of the 13th century was already a part of the defensive structures of the city wall, denoting the northern extremity of the medieval city.
By the middle of the 14th century, D'Este was the owner of a large block that reached the walls of the city, and over these years, to improve the defense Porta dei Leoni turned the watchtower into a powerful fortress . From the basement to the first floor around the tower, brick walls were erected, forming a ring in order to have there artillery and military weapons . From the corners the thickness of the walls was increased - thus there were four small turrets . On all sides the fortress was surrounded by a moat that was fed by the waters of the canal located outside the mountains One wall .
At the same time in the east of the city, by the order of Alberto V d'Este, another castle was built - Palazzo Scythona. This castle, famous for the frescoes of the artist Francesco del Cossa, depicting the months and seasons, was intended for "fun".
In his design of Castello Estense, architect Bartolino da Novara relied on the already existing Rocca dei Leoni fortress, adding to it three new towers. The work began on September 29, 1385, on the day of Archangel Michael. There were four entrances to the castle, one on each side, and communication with the outside world was supported by drawbridges. For about 70 years the appearance of the castle remained unchanged, as well as its functions - strictly combat.
The interior of the castle is open to visitors daily from 9:30 to 17:30 (the ticket office closes at 16:45), and from June to February the castle is closed on Mondays. The entrance fee for the castle is 8 EUR, the ticket to the castle + visiting the temporary exhibitions will cost 12 EUR.
Ferrara Cathedral
Among other architectural objects, the Ferrara Cathedral of the 12th century deserves attention. with a three-nave marble facade. The cathedral is characterized by a combination of Romanesque and Gothic styles on the lower and upper levels, respectively. The central element of the facade of the cathedral is a portico, ending with a statue of the Madonna with a child, above which there are bas-reliefs depicting scenes of the Last Judgment. Around the second portal of the cathedral, built in the 18th century, previously housed tiles with plots on the theme of the seasons, now exhibited in the cathedral museum.
