The Berlin-Dahlem Museum-Museum, a part of the State Museums of Berlin, is located in the formerly Dahlem building in the south-west Berlin district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf,
The group of museums of Dahlem united in one place a collection of exhibits of non-European art and culture, which developed over the centuries. This is one of the most important in the whole world and unique in its kind complex, if we talk about its size, quality and balance. The plan for its creation was proposed in the beginning of the 20th century, but only after the reconstruction of the building in the 1970s it became possible to implement it.
As far back as the 19th century, the first village was formed in the Dahlem estate, which by 1920 entered the district Tselendorf. In memory of this in the mid-1990s. it was decided to set up the Agricultural Museum here, and so far everyone who comes here has an excellent opportunity to visit the store that preserved the interior of the 1920s.
The project of the construction of the Museum Center Berlin-Dahlem was directed by Wilhelm von Bode, who was then the chief architect who built all the museums in the districts of Dahlem and Mitte. As a basis, he took the style of "new materiality", whose popularity in Germany grew very much in the 1920s, and a characteristic feature was the approach to reality, devoid of idealism and romance. However, the construction itself was completed already forty years after the death of Bode, in 1969-1973, under the supervision of the architects Ebert and Bornemann
The Berlin-Dahlem Museum Center includes: Museum Asian Art, Ethnological Museum and the Museum of European Cultures (since May 2005). In addition, there is also a small market where everyone can buy fresh produce from local agricultural lands
Museum of Asian Art
Museum of Asian Art united under one roof the collections of the Museum of Indian Art (Museum für Indische Kunst) and the Museum of Art (Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst)
The section dedicated to Indian art includes about 20 thousand items and is considered one of the most stunning collections located outside of India. Since 2006, the new halls of the museum exhibit art and crafts from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Tibet, India, South-West and Central Asia, from the second century to the present day
Ethnological Museum
The ethnological museum of the Berlin-Dahlem complex is one of the largest in the world. Nearly a million exhibits of the pre-industrial era are presented to the attention of visitors, and its special pride is the many living quarters of different nations of the world and the Beninese bronze ware
Museum of European Cultures
A short walk through the Museum of European Cultures is of great importance on the scale of the whole museum center. This Europe-oriented cultural and historical museum shows how the states of Europe are converging and growing together. The museum participates in this process, creating its own unique collection, conducting research and exhibitions.
