The Kloster Lichtenthal in Baden-Baden, unlike many others, not only still exists, but has never closed since its foundation, still functions as monastery and even remains the residence of the same monastic order - Cistercian. This is surprising, given the turbulence of local history and how old the monastery is.
The Likhtental Monastery was founded by the wife of a local ruler - the Margrave of Baden in the 13th century. Since then, he has worked without interruptions, and now there are nuns, and there is a church school (one of the oldest in the city). Monastic buildings were changed and supplemented with new buildings, so there are very different buildings. For about 100 years (in the 13th and 14th centuries) the monastery Furstenkapelle was the family burial vault of the Margraves of Baden - they were buried there
The monastic complex consists of several buildings . Furstenkapelle - one of the oldest of them . It is built in 1288 g ., here you can see graves of margraves, sculptures and carved wooden objects, including the famous altar . There are also statues from other monasteries of the region, closed . Klosterkirche - another ancient building, this is the main building The church of the monastery . It is well preserved, it also has a lot of things - sculptures, famous statues and even more famous stained-glass windows . Besides these churches, there are many other buildings, religious and economic, mostly 16-17 centuries of creation, the young one dates back to the 18th century (later it was just repaired and rebuilt, but did not build a new one) . Almost all buildings are in Gothic style or late Gothic .
Interesting and very quiet place, there are quite a lot of things left, and to take a walk, if there is time, - it is a pleasure . When visit it must be taken into account that this is a functioning monastery and this assumes certain rules of conduct . Do not go there, where it is closed to tourists, make noise and t . d . To inspect churches during services it is impossible . Also in the monastery there are guest rooms (in a separate house, they can be rented), a cafe and a shop (sells literature and monastery products: baked goods, bread, jams, liqueurs and much more, mostly made according to own recipes, no prescription) .
