The Makhovo Lake (Máchovo jezero) is located 65 km from Prague, and has rightfully gained fame as one of the most beautiful places in the Czech Republic. In the Tertiary period of the Cenozoic era, this place was a huge lake, as part of the ancient sea. During the last Ice Age, the lake dried up, leaving behind only peat bogs. The lake received its current name after 1945, and officially wears it since 1961. "Makhovo" can be translated as "Lake Mahi" in honor of the Czech romantic poet Karel Ginek Mahi
